  • Why Choose Us?

Join Our K to 12 Team!

Whether you're an experienced teacher who's ready to retire or recently did, dedicated to helping struggling students, and/or looking to supplement your income, we may be the right fit for you.

Why Should You Work for Us?

We're Realists. . .

If you're the type of educator we will hire, we know you can earn more as a private tutor, although we also pay better than many tutoring services and take care that group sessions are appropriately balanced with students in the same class and needing similar content support.

The difference comes down to guaranteed payments and letting us handle recruitment, scheduling, and other business matters for you.

Payments

Our clients pay in advance of a session, so you'll be paid in the event of a no show. A last-minute cancellation is also paid the full rate unless you agree to reschedule due to an emergency or illness. (We say "unless" because occasionally our tutors experience the same problems and clients are understanding, but both parties need to agree to a last-minute rescheduling.)

Also, we handle invoicing, follow up if payments aren't made promptly, and deduct from our percentage the fees for credit card processing and the monthly service charge.

We also cover costs for the online platform, the invoicing software, and handle all marketing and recruitment leaving you to do what you do best:  educate and support our clients!

Troubleshooting

Whether it's an unprepared client, scheduling conflicts, a client with an attitude, or any other awkward conversation, you can pass it on to us to handle so that your tutoring time is separate from your personal time.  We stand behind you.

Join Our K to 12 Team!

Who are you?

You are a motivated, friendly, and articulate person who loves helping children succeed.  You are responsible, prompt, and honor your commitments.  You are enthusiastic about helping our clients grow intellectually; achieve academic independence and social milestones; and you treat everyone with respect and patience.

What you should know. . .

USA Tutors is only looking for people who are freelance contractors for all advertised positions. This means that if we reach a non-contractual employment agreement you provide us with your availability and keep it updated.  We call you when someone has scheduled a session, and you agree to work that time.  For contractual agreements, you are committing to meet with a student or group of students on a weekly basis for one or more terms.  It is your responsibility to schedule all other personal, professional, and academic commitments around that time.

You are paid on the 1st or 16th of each month and are responsible for your withholdings.  (If these dates fall on a holiday or weekend they may be shifted by one day.)

If you earn over $599 a year with us, we will send you a 1099 form for your taxes.  We do not withhold federal or state taxes on your behalf, so please plan ahead.

At this time we are receptive to online (nationally) and in person (in Connecticut) applicants.  To work in this division you must possess several years of experience teaching in the USA on a relevant level and hold an active teaching certification for either a state or Montessori system.

Professionalism

There are a number of ways to define professionalism, but ours boils down to respect for you, our clients, and the company, largely through accurate and timely communication about short-term and long-term changes to your ability to meet job commitments. If your circumstances change, you agree to let us know ASAP so we can make appropriate changes to continue to support our clients. Whether it's a family engagement, a medical situation, or a change in your employment status, please give us sufficient notice to respond and not leave the client hanging.

Qualifications and Compensation

Qualifications

Please meet ALL of the following qualifications:

  • Possess five or more years of full-time public school or quality private school teaching experience in the United States beyond student teaching; Montessori experience is acceptable
  • Successfully completed a master's program in Education or a relevant field at least two years ago
  • Possess a current US certification in Secondary, Elementary, or Early Childhood Education or a comparable certification in Special Ed. or a similar area.  (Recently certified applicants whose certifications may have lapsed may still apply but should note their status on their application and in their cover letter.)
  • Be able to provide three letters of reference pertaining to your teaching/tutoring skills from the last seven years, at least one in the last three years
  • Be able to show written evidence that you passed a background check in the last 14 months or pass one with us through the State of Connecticut Police
  • Be willing and able to brush up on any unfamiliar or rusty material independently in preparation for a session
  • Be willing and able to learn an online platform designed for tutoring

To apply:

Submit our K to 12 Application form and  Availability form along with a cover letter explaining your interest in the position and what you would bring to the role as well as your resume.  (Read the section below first for tips.)

Proofread carefully.  If you don't make a good impression on us, we will presume that you won't make one on our clients either.

Application and Availability forms are at the bottom of this page.

Payment:

  • Tutors in this role earn $40/hour per child for private homework support sessions, $42.50 for AP/IB classes, $50/hour for SAT/ACT/AP preparation, and $50/hour for special education and/or tutoring with full lesson plan support.
  • Prep. time for sessions for children is included in your hourly rate.
  • If you meet a client in their home or at a mutually agreed upon location such as a library, there is an additional $15/session for locations within 15 miles of your point of origin (home or workplace).  Additionally, there is an additional per mile rate for locations more than 15 miles from your point of origin equal to the current per diem travel rates on the perdiem.gov site.  (There is no additional payment if the client is coming to your home or workplace to meet you since they are incurring the travel costs.)
  • You will be categorized as a freelance contractor, which means that we will issue you a 1099 form in January if you earn more than $599 with us.  You are responsible for tax withholdings.

Q & A

  • May I apply if I only hold a bachelor's or associate's degree in Education?  Not at this time, sorry!

  • Are you hiring paraprofessionals?  Not at this time unless you have previously served as the lead instructor in a class, but we genuinely appreciate the work you do!

  • Is a background check mandatory?  Yes since you are working with minors; but we will accept evidence of a successful background check that includes fingerprinting from the last 14 months

  • What if I can't provide written confirmation of completing a successful background check but worked in a public school setting?  We will need you to go through the process again, but we will explain the situation to the families and see if they are comfortable with you starting while the process is underway.

  • Who pays for the background check?  You pay as an applicant.  If you pass the background check and accept a position with us then we will reimburse you for the payments you made to the appropriate government offices.  Whether or not you pass, USA Tutors will provide you with a copy of the results for your records and potential future employers.

  • May I work with you in an "under the table" arrangement?  No, all of our positions are formal with official payments.  Anyone who earns $599 or more a year with us will be issued a 1099.

  • Am I eligible to work for you as an international student?  No - Presently we are only hiring experienced and certified US teachers for this division.

  • May I work in this capacity if I did not attend an accredited US program in Education but am certified to teach on the relevant level in the United States?  Yes - However, interim or emergency certifications are not acceptable. You need to have passed your Praxis exams and earned a full certification in your area of expertise and grade levels.

Application Materials

Additional Information

Your completed application should include:

· A cover letter meant for both USA Tutors and the parents of the children you may be supporting

o Be sure that you list your most notable and relevant educational credentials and experience.

o Let your personality shine through.

o Give parents a sense of what to expect if they hire you to work with their child(ren). If you’re likely to be teaching/providing assistance in our online platform then mention any technical expertise.

o Feel free to include a couple quotations from parents of children you supported, the children themselves, and/or former supervisors.

o Proofread carefully! (While the English professor in me is emerging here, it’s true that oversights in proofreading make a poor first impression, especially to someone looking to hire an educator.)

· A current resume

o For internal use only

o Verify that you have listed all certifications and credentials that may be relevant including out-of-state teaching certifications; First Aid, CPR, and/or AED certifications/training; TESOL; and secondary subject areas.

o If you’re recently out of graduate school, include paid and volunteer positions in which you worked with children and explain your responsibilities. You should also include your GPA in your master’s program.

· Three letters of reference that do not need to be specifically for this position but must address your abilities as an educator (teacher, tutor, or trainer)

o The letters should be from the last seven years for experienced classroom teachers and the last three years from new teachers. (The less classroom teaching experience you possess, the more recent your letters should be.)

o The letters may be from the same people you list as references on our application as long as they can be reached to answer follow-up questions.

o Two letters must be from a current or former supervisor and the third may be from a colleague or parent(s) of a child(ren) you taught. The third letter may be from an older (middle or high school) student reflecting on your teaching and its impact or from parents of younger children.

o New letters may be emailed to us directly from the writer while existing letters may be scanned and submitted electronically as part of your application packet. HR@USA-Tutors.com

· Our “Application” for K to 12 instructors on this page

· Our “Availability Form” on the same page

· A copy of your undergraduate and graduate transcripts – electronic and unofficial is fine (Experienced teachers with five or more years of classroom experience may limit their transcripts to only the last page as long as we can clearly see your full name, the name and stamp of the degree granting institution, the title of the degree earned, the final GPA, and the date the degree was awarded.)

· Copies of each of your teaching certifications

· If applicable: copies of other certifications such as the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, ESL or Literacy volunteer, etc.

Once you have submitted this application packet electronically, we will schedule a live interview either in person if you're in CT or online.

If the interview goes well, our next steps will be:

· You must provide evidence of having passed a reputable background check, including fingerprinting, in the last 14 months or undergo one through your local police department/the State Police. The applicant must pay for their own background check. If you pass and accept a position with us we will reimburse you for the cost in your first 30 days with us. If you do not pass or we are unable to place you then we will not reimburse you for the cost.  (We will provide you with the written results for your records irrespective of the outcome.)
